SET THE TONE

In one breathe i'd like to apologize to the couple whose conversation i eavesdropped on in the Melcom building today. Truth I wasn't looking to but you see, the gentleman's statement caught my attention and I became interested in what his lady friend had to say in response.

Gentleman: Eish (in a tone of sudden remembrance) my sister said I should buy something
Lady friend: what?(up set face)
Gentleman: something she needed for the baby. This baby business kraa she take dey worry me. What "nor" is it?
Lady: Silence.....

It got me thinking... when we date people, we seem to have the opportunity severally to shape their expectations. We seem through other peoples stories to have the opportunity to state our position on issues and as many times we seem to fail.

Fast forward a few years... were that relationship to transition into a marriage we all of a sudden expect this same gentleman to love or at least see the point to the many endless purchases that are characteristic of having a baby right?

Well, today, this afternoon in May of 2013, you had the chance to set his mind along the path of shopping for babies, and you blew it. Come 2016 or whatever time you could have made your life or the life of a sister somewhere easier by fixing that little, little huddle today.

Same I guess applies to several other scenarios in life, we set the tone for the future in several little ways everyday. Yelling at your spouse in front of the children; using abusive language with the help or nanny; being mean to the driver; talking bad about your parents in front of the children; insulting leaders of society in front of children, and this happens so easily when a news item comes up on TV or radio and we react instantly; going chasing young girls and your son finding out... etc etc etc

On the positive side though, some people set the tone a long time ago for some of the great things we enjoy today; husbands that cook; women equality; monogamy; husbands going into the labor ward; independence; working wives; women clergy; mobile phones; paid maternity leave; democracy etc etc etc

I am going to make a conscious effort to remember to set the right tones as often as i can, so help me God. Of course you are invited to do same. We just might change the world sooner rather than later....

Happy AU Day.
With all my love
YSO
